Strategic Shift

From platform promotion to sustained cultural participation.

Overview

Amazon Music was competing in one of the world's most mature streaming categories. While the platform had significant commercial backing, the strategic challenge extended beyond product features or pricing: it needed to establish genuine cultural credibility within UK music.

Competing with established platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music required more than visibility. It required relevance - and the ability to demonstrate a genuine understanding of the artists, audiences and communities shaping contemporary music.

Forward Slash led the long-term audience, social and cultural strategy for Amazon Music's +44 platform, using social as one expression of a broader strategy centred on community, partnerships and cultural participation.

The Challenge

The perceived challenge was to improve +44's social performance.

The real challenge was more strategic.

+44 needed to become a credible participant within UK Black music culture - building recognition and trust among the audiences and communities it wanted to reach.

Success therefore depended on shifting perception, not simply increasing reach or engagement.

The challenge was to develop a strategy that could consistently demonstrate value to audiences and the wider music community, while supporting Amazon Music's broader commercial and organisational objectives.

The Strategic Shift

Instead of treating social media as a marketing channel, the work repositioned it as the public expression of Amazon Music's wider cultural strategy.

The focus shifted from publishing content to building long-term credibility through participation, partnerships and consistent audience value.

The Strategic Response

Rather than beginning with content, Forward Slash began with audience reality. The strategy was built around a simple principle:‍

Cultural relevance is strengthened when organisations contribute meaningful value before asking for attention.

Social media was treated not as an isolated marketing channel, but as one part of a wider ecosystem connecting audience understanding, editorial strategy, partnerships, artist relationships and cultural presence.

Strategic Approach

The strategic approach focused on five interconnected areas:

Audience

Developing a long-term audience strategy grounded in cultural insight and audience behaviour.

Editorial

Building editorial frameworks that balanced entertainment, community and brand objectives.

Content Systems

Creating repeatable content systems that could respond to emerging cultural moments without relying solely on trends

Cultural Proximity

Strengthening partnerships with artists, festivals, creators and music communities to increase cultural proximity.

Ways of Working

Establishing planning and strategic processes that created consistency across campaigns rather than relying on isolated successes.

The result was a strategy designed to build credibility and trust over time, rather than chase short-term engagement.

Execution & Delivery

The strategy was translated into an ongoing programme of editorial planning, campaign strategy, creative production, partnership support and audience development.

Forward Slash brought together strategic direction with a multidisciplinary delivery team spanning creative, design, video, community management and paid media, working alongside Amazon Music's internal teams to ensure activity consistently connected back to the wider strategic objective.

This included developing and evolving the +44 social ecosystem, supporting cultural partnerships and artist activations, and creating content and formats designed to strengthen the platform's role within UK music culture.

Strategic Impact

The work contributed to the growth of +44 as a culturally relevant platform within UK music, strengthening audience connection while supporting wider organisational objectives.

More importantly, the engagement demonstrated that cultural relevance is built through sustained participation and audience value, rather than isolated moments of visibility.

Stronger audience connection and sustained community growth.

Increased credibility across key music communities and industry partners.

Stronger integration between social, partnerships, events & artist relationships.

Long-term strategic systems that enabled continued performance beyond campaigns.

Awareness is rarely the challenge - credibility is.

Organisations often assume that increased visibility will solve audience growth. In reality, lasting relevance comes from consistently creating value within the communities they want to reach before asking for attention.

Strategy succeeds when organisations earn trust first - and attention follows.
